Global expert in biopharmaceuticals

Swedish firm Ferring Pharmaceuticals, which excels in reproductive and maternal health and urology, has been established in the Vaud municipality of Saint-Prex since 2006.

"We are ideally located at the heart of Health Valley, where we can find highly qualified labor and where the quality of life is excellent," says an enthusiastic Michel Pettigrew, president and CEO of Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Based in Saint-Prex in the canton of Vaud since 2006, this internationally renowned biopharmaceutical company focuses much of its activity on research – identifying, developing, and marketing innovative products in the sectors of reproductive and maternal health, urology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and orthopedics.

"Ferring has subsidiaries in almost 60 countries and markets its products in 110 countries," Pettigrew continues. "Our key markets are the USA, Europe, Japan, and China." The site in Saint-Prex houses both the global head-quarters of the group – which generated revenues of 1.8 billion euros in 2016 – and a production factory which manufactures two products in the fields of gastroenterology (for the treatment of inflammatory intestinal illnesses) and urology (for the treatment of bed-wetting among children and nocturia among adults).

Its recent innovations include a new fertility treatment for women, introduced at the start of the year. It is the first fertility treatment that is administered via a personalized dosing regimen based on the level of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and the weight of the woman. This individualized approach means that each patient receives the correct dose right from the beginning of the treatment.

Well established in the region

The Swedish company collaborates actively with the various members of the financial and institutional community in the region and chooses local suppliers and service providers. In terms of education, it has launched the Healthcare Supply Chain Academy (HSCA) program in collaboration with the International Institute for the Management of Logistics (IML/EPFL) and the companies Merck and Supply Chain Operations. It also supports various local organizations such as the Théodora and Perceval foundations.

In terms of the environment, the group has improved its transport policy by means of ride-sharing, while its "Olympic Ferring" initiative encourages employees to take part in regional sporting events.

Increasing number of employees in Switzerland

"In 11 years we have doubled the number of staff we have in Saint-Prex," says the CEO. The group employs 700 people in total on its site in Vaud, covering all the needs of the company, be they administrative, technical, or scientific. "Production operations in the wider sense of the term are carried out by operators, engineers, chemists, and pharmacists. All trades are represented at Ferring," says Pettigrew. In the years to come, the company intends to dominate the reproductive and maternal health sector both scientifically and commercially and become recognized as a global specialist in urology and gastroenterology.

A valuable support from the Economic Promotion

"Economic Development – Canton of Vaud has always been front and center in supporting us, in particular when we were looking for our site at Saint-Prex," said chairman and CEO of Ferring Pharmaceuticals Michel Pettigrew. In 2015, the company won the "Vaud International Business Award” in the "Foreign Companies" category. "It was an honor and a real reward for all of us who have contributed to the development of Ferring since 2006. It is also recognition for our efforts in terms of local production, scientific collaborations, job creation, and support for the local community. Ferring is delighted to be established in the canton of Vaud. We are continuing our exchanges with everyone involved on a financial, social, and political level, as well as with the regional authorities. We also hope to maintain our excellent working relationship with the canton of Vaud, with whom we share common values of quality of life, innovation, and expertise."
