The global leader of the digital world of tomorrow

Cisco, with headquarters in San Jose, California, develops, manufactures and sells networking hardware, telecommunications equipment and other high-technology services and products. Established in 1984, the company is present in the canton of Vaud since 2007.

Originating in network technologies (routers, switches, servers), Cisco allows, in a way, the internet to work. "Our people, our products and our partners help people and businesses connect securely, but also seize the digital opportunities of tomorrow," says Christian Martin, Managing Director of Cisco Switzerland.

Cisco has more than 300 employees in Switzerland, located in Zurich, Bern and the village of Rolle in Vaud. "The canton of Vaud is an important pool for innovative international companies in search of excellence," says Anuj Jain, Director of Strategic Innovation at Cisco in Rolle. Working in the heart of the canton of Vaud allows us to connect with these companies, especially when it comes to non-technological companies. This enables us to understand the needs and challenges they face in the digital world and the role Cisco can play in addressing these needs and challenges."

Cisco also has a development unit within the Innovation Park of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and is supporting the Global Center for Digital Business Transformation at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), doing digitization research. Rolle is a multi-functional operation, housing a diverse group of employees working in innovation, development, finance and sales. "Beyond the presence of many innovative international companies, we value the access to a wide range of talents, including graduates from EPFL which is an important source of recruitment for our group," said Anuj Jain.

Generalization of digital disruption

In the years to come, the firm predicts digital disruption will impact all sectors of society, whether in health, automotive or agriculture. "All companies will be first and foremost technology companies, regardless which business they are in," says Christian Martin. Products that can be connected will have a higher value."

Founded in 1984 near San Francisco, Cisco now has a global presence and has more than 70,000 employees. Its revenue was close to $ 50 billion in fiscal year 2017. Beyond networks and internet infrastructure, its products and solutions include wireless devices, security, data center and multi-cloud solutions, video, software, data analytics and technologies for the Internet of Things. Its clientele consists of businesses of all sizes, as well as service providers.

"Our strategy in terms of innovation is based on five pillars: build, buy, partner, invest and co-develop," says Anuj Jain. We have a community of more than 400'000 developers worldwide and hold over 19'000 patents. " One of the innovations developed in the Rolle office is a platform for IoT (Internet of Things) that extends Cloud services to the edge of the network close to devices (things). The platform was created using a modular approach, so that it can be used in multiple domains such as oil and gas, utilities, smart cities or manufacturing.

A valuable support from the Economic Promotion

Before setting up its first center in the Vaudois community of Bussigny in 2005, Cisco had been in contact with the Economic Development Canton of Vaud (DEV) for many years, notably via the representative of the GGBa in California (formerly known as DEWS). This enabled the world leader in computer networking equipment to become familiar with the strengths of the canton of Vaud such as the number of innovative companies, its close links between the world of research and companies, as well as its great availability of skilled labor, etc. These strengths were the main reasons for Cisco to choose Vaud.

The initial installation in the locality of Bussigny was provisional. The American firm was looking for larger premises in the Lake Geneva region. Since 2007, with the help of DEV,Cisco is based in the village of Rolle. DEV has also supported the company with the search for apartments and houses for executives, the connection with private actors and high schools, and providing support for applications of work permits.
