Eating better – a huge issue

With a long agricultural tradition behind it, the canton of Vaud has seen the agri-food sector develop, beginning over a century ago with the creation of Nestlé in Vevey in 1905. Other influential businesses followed, including Eckes-Granini, Reitzel, and Hilcona. The region also has a long-standing industrial heritage which is complemented by a strong spirit of innovation, putting it at the forefront when it comes to designing solutions that anticipate what will be of importance in the future. The canton also benefits from the expertise and reputation of international businesses that are leaders in their fields, such as General Mills, Chiquita, and ADM.

Swiss agri-food products are exported throughout the world and carry with them a strong brand image, combining quality, authenticity, and expertise. The country’s agri-food industry creates almost 3.5 billion francs in turnover abroad every year.

The canton of Vaud also has a number of important players in terms of research and development, including Agroscope in Changins, Agropôle in Molondin and the Nestlé Research Center. A world leader in its sector, Nestlé has also developed a branch specializing in health science. The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has also opened a Food and nutrition center devoted entirely to nutrition and food production issues, with experts from different areas of specialization.
